Bhai Dooj (Bhaiya Dooj) 2018 Date in India: The festive season in India has just begun and everywhere you go, you can see people coming together to share time with their loved ones. Soon after Diwali comes Bhai Dooj, a festival that celebrates the beautiful bond between siblings. It is known by different names in different states, such as Bhai Phota in West Bengal, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Yama Dwitiya in southern parts of India and is celebrated on the second day after the new moon or Shukla Paksha in the Hindu lunar month of Kartik.
The auspicious second day is also known as ‘dooj’ or ‘dwithiya’, thus giving it the name Bhai Dooj or Bhathru Dwithiya. This year, it will be celebrated on November 9.
Sisters apply tilak or vermilion on their brother’s forehead and pray for their long life. According to Hindu mythology, there is a legend behind the celebration of Bhai Dooj. Once the God of Death, Yama, visited his sister Yamuna and since she was so thrilled, she welcomed her brother by applying tilak on his forehead. She also offered him sweets and gifts and in return, he gave her a boon that whoever celebrated Bhai Dooj with his sister and took a bath in the holy river of Yamuna would never go to hell.
