Halle Bailey may now be Ariel, but to Chlöe, she’s still her little sister. In an April 12 appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Chlöe recalled her emotional reaction to seeing her sister in the live-action “Little Mermaid” trailer for the first time. “I was screaming and I was crying,” Chlöe told Barrymore.
The singer said she was getting ready for the Oscars afterparty back in March, and “dropped everything” to watch ther sister embody the beloved mermaid in the latest trailer. “She is a real life mermaid, a siren, graceful in all her beauty,” Chlöe said, “and people get to see what I’ve always seen since we were little girls.”
Chlöe also spoke about the representation Halle’s portrayal offers: “What she’s going to do for all the young kids around the world, to see her, to know that they can be anything that they want to be — it doesn’t matter what society tells them — I know that’s going to be so inspiring, and it even inspires me. I am the proudest big sister in the entire world.”
Halle’s initial casting was groundbreaking for a number of reasons. For one, she’s the first Black actor to portray Ariel, and only the second to play a Disney princess (the other being Anika Noni Rose, the voice of Princess Tiana). Despite some backlash, this is a major win for representation in Disney films, and as Halle told POPSUGAR back in November of 2022, it still makes her emotional. “I just feel super honored that I get to take on a role like this,” she said. “It really makes me pinch myself at times. It doesn’t feel real, but I’m just really grateful with the overall response, especially from the babies. They keep me going. Seeing all the reactions of them just makes me cry and fills me with such joy.”
“The Little Mermaid” is out on May 26.
