Bill Gates, who is the co-founder of Microsoft, and his wife Melinda Gates have announced their divorce as the couple explained “we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple”. Lord Alan Sugar, 74, took to Twitter and took aim at the couple’s news in a swipe which caused social media users to react.
It comes as Bill and Melinda announced their separation after 27 years of marriage.
In a statement posted to Mr Gates’ Twitter account, the philanthropist said: “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage.
“Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.
“We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.
“We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”
Lord Sugar reacted to the news as he took a cheeky swipe at the couple in a dig online.
In view of his 5.2 million followers, he wrote: “Bill Gates divorce. Lawyers must be licking their lips. I wonder if they will use Excel for the calculations.
“For sure they will use Word for legal communication most probably sent by email using Outlook.”
The Apprentice star’s tweet caught the attention of many social media users which sparked some backlash.
One wrote: “The fact you find this funny that a man’s marriage has broken down isn’t funny.”
Another penned: “Very quick to jump and make jokes about other people’s misfortunes.”
A third wrote: “Any divorce is sad and not an opportunity for anyone to make stupid jokes.”

“Why comment on someone else’s divorce?” a fourth quizzed.
News of the couple’s divorce went viral on Monday with many social media users sharing their sympathy over the news.
Others took aim at the couple’s divorce news as they joked Melinda could secure a large pay-out from Mr Gates in their divorce.
The pair had up a combined $124 billion (£89bn) fortune, making them among the top five richest couples in the world.
Mr Gates, 65, made most of his huge fortune after co-founding Microsoft in the 1970s.
He dropped out of Harvard University to create the software company with his school-friend Paul Allen in 1975.
The Microsoft owner made history by becoming the youngest-ever billionaire at the age of just 31.
He and his wife are also co-chairs and trustees of their non-profit Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
