After becoming a mum for the first time when her daughter Royce Lillian was born in last year, much-loved comedy actress Rebel Wilson has opened up on the emotional reason she opted to use a surrogate.
The Pitch Perfect star, 43 – who with her partner Ramona Agruma welcomed their little girl in November 2022 – has described being inspired by a "year of health", which she announced she was undergoing in 2020.
Rebel focussed during those 12 months on striving towards a healthier lifestyle, all with the aim of one day wanting to become a mother.
A fertility doctor, she later explained, had recommended at the time she begin making serious changes as she approached her 40th birthday in order to have a better chance of naturally conceiving, sparking her health kick.
Rebel's diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome equally urged the star begin to lead a healthier lifestyle and prompted her huge weight loss.
The widely-adored funny-woman dropped a staggering 80lbs – equal to around six stone – after fully embracing her healthier way of living, before making the important decision to start IVF.
Speaking to TODAY last week, Rebel – who proposed to girlfriend Ramona during a trip to Disneyland, Orlando in February – addressed publicly for the first time why she decided not to carry her little girl herself.
"I was lucky to get an embryo from the process because of my age and because I have polycystic ovary syndrome. With just one embryo, I decided to go with surrogacy," she explained.
"Physically I could have carried the baby, but there was a much higher statistical chance it would work with surrogate."
The Aussie star announced the news of her beautiful daughter's birth on Instagram, sharing a beautiful picture of her newborn and revealing her name, Royce Lillian.
Rebel wrote : "Beyond proud to announce the birth of my first child, Royce Lillian, born this past week via surrogate.
"I can’t even describe the love I have for her, she’s a beautiful miracle! I am forever grateful to everyone who has been involved, (you know who you are), this has been years in the making…
"But particularly wanted to thank my gorgeous surrogate who carried her and birthed her with such grace and care. Thank you for helping me start my own family, it’s an amazing gift. The BEST gift!!"
She then added: "I am ready to give little Roycie all the love imaginable. I am learning quickly…much respect to all the Mums out there! Proud to be in your club."
It’s not known how long new mums Ramona and Rebel have been together, as the star only revealed in June 2022 that she is gay.
At the time, Rebel revealed that she had felt "forced" to come out after a newspaper threatened to break the story themselves and gave her just two days to come up with a response.
