“Vanderpump Rules” hotspot SUR wasn’t always the drama-filled restaurant that viewers have come to know and love.
Guillermo Zapata, who opened the restaurant in 1998, recently took Page Six on a tour of the Los Angeles venue and told us all about how the restaurant changed from having just a few tables to hosting some of West Hollywood’s best parties.
“I think it was only 2,000 square feet,” Zapata said. “Not even that. And it was white.”
“We were so small, more like a boutique restaurant-style with all the local people in West Hollywood for the entertainment business,” he explained. “They were here. We’re talking about producers, we’re talking about celebrities.”
The first celebrity to put SUR on the map was George Michael — who was also “Vanderpump Rules” star James Kennedy’s godfather. Zapata recalled Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Al Pacino and Sylvester Stallone also dining at the eatery before Lisa Vanderpump teamed with him to expand the restaurant in 2005.
Now, SUR consists of multiple rooms and was redecorated with the help of Vanderpump.
