Kate Garraway was pictured with her husband Derek Draper outside for the first time in a year over the Christmas period. The pair were joined by their children as they headed out to watch a pantomime.

In the pictures released on Boxing Day, Derek was seen smiling at the camera, much to the relief of fans following his Covid battle.

The author has been dealing with the aftermath of contracting Covid over the past year.

He was first hospitalised in March 2020 and was only allowed to return home with round-the-clock care earlier in 2021.

However, despite his trip to the pantomime, Kate shared more insight into what had actually happened.

Chatting on Good Morning Britain earlier today, she explained this left him exhausted.

Kate said: “He’s doing alright. He is phenomenally fatigued at the moment.

“Very fatigued and very weak and actually the trip to the pantomime he was then not out of bed afterwards.

“He thought it was worth it and it was a special thing to be with the children holding their hands and doing something normal.

“But it took everything out of him.”

Kate admitted she did question whether he wanted to leave the house in the morning before they left.

However, it was lovely to see him smiling again.

She added: “The speech wasn’t there that morning but you can see that he is aware that something special is happening.

“Before we left, I said, ‘You’re very tired, do you want to do this?’ And he said, ‘Yes.'”

Kate also shared a poignant update on Derek’s condition over the festive season.

The broadcaster posted a photo of him with his two children in bed on Christmas Day.

She wrote: “So the last 24 hours has been bumpy – a scare that meant Derek might have had to go back into hospital ( thankfully sorted by a visit from nurse/carer), he has also had one of his ultra fatigue days so has been too weak to do much other than sleep.

“I burnt the parsnips (Darceys favourite) & got the ‘wrong’ Lego for Billy. (sic)

“But now snuggled up around Dad’s bed watching #nativity everything feels suddenly perfect

“Feel so grateful to have the chance to be together.

“Sending love & hoping you have found some joy today whatever your circumstances – #merrychristmas all!”
