Eight more female inmates of the Byculla Women’s Prison were admitted to JJ Hospital on Sunday with complaints of vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain. Since Friday, 103 inmates and a four-month-old baby boy have been admitted with similar symptoms. While many have been discharged, 15 female inmates and one male inmate are still undergoing treatment.
Dr. Sanjay Surase, medical superintendent of the hospital, said all patients are stable, including three pregnant inmates. “The male patient is in the Medical Intensive Care Unit as he has a history of seizures and is also HIV positive,” he added.
The BMC had taken water samples for testing but sources said the water was already treated with chlorine and so found to be fit. The FDA report on food samples is awaited.
