Abhimanyu murder: one more in custody

The police team probing the Abhimanyu murder case has apprehended one more person, who was part of the conspiracy to murder the Students Federation of India activist.

Official sources said the arrest of the person, presumably a Popular Front of India activist, would be recorded by Thursday morning. Besides him, five more persons have been taken into custody and are being interrogated.

A dossier of over 200 PFI/Social Democratic Party of India activists have been prepared to verify their role in the crime, if any.

The police have already recorded the arrest of seven people — all activists of the PFI/SDPI, in connection with the case. Further, the roles of a few acquitted in the Muvattupuzha hand-chopping case are also being probed.

The investigators are actively pursuing reports that some of the suspects, members of the assault squad that murdered Abhimanyu, have left the country via Bengaluru using forged passports. They, however, are yet to receive any solid leads to confirm this and firmly believe that the suspects are still on the run.

“We have only seen media reports in this regard and are verifying the possibility. There is no confirmation as of now,” said M.P. Dinesh, District Police Chief, Kochi city.

It took the police a couple of days after the murder to issue an alert to airports across the country to prevent the accused from fleeing the country. The department is also coordinating with police forces in the neighbouring States to trace their hideouts.

Meanwhile, the police are unlikely to invoke the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against the accused in the light of a legal opinion to this effect.

“We can only say that no charges under UAPA have been invoked in the case of any of the accused as of now. A final decision on this, however, will be made at a later stage after due consultations,” the Commissioner held.
