The ruling AIADMK and the principal opposition DMK took individual credit and lauded their respective leaders for their efforts on Monday soon after the decision taken at the first meeting of the Cauvery Water Management Authority in Delhi was made public.
DMK leader Duraimurugan, who brought up the issue in the Assembly earlier in the day, was curious to know about the developments in Delhi and sought a reply from the Chief Minister in the House later in the afternoon too.
On receiving inputs from officials, who participated in the meeting in Delhi, Mr. Palaniswami said 31.24 tmc of water was to be released to Tamil Nadu for July and referred to the observation of CWMA chairman S. Masood Hussain that the meeting marked a “historic moment”. AIADMK legislators reacted to the Chief Minister’s statement by thumping their desks.
Speaker P. Dhanapal recalled the efforts taken by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in realising the goal of the State through several steps and also lauded the efforts taken by Mr. Palaniswami towards the cause. He thanked the Chief Minister for having achieved the goal. AIADMK MLAs thumped the desks in approval.
Mr. Duraimurugan, however, rose to say that though steps were taken by Jayalalithaa, his party president and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi too had contributed immensely towards the cause by taking several steps to get justice on the Cauvery issue. Amidst thumping of desks by the DMK MLAs, Mr. Duraimurugan said the House should remember Mr. Karunanidhi’s contributions towards the cause.
Earlier in the day, he demanded an all-party meeting to discuss the Cauvery issue but the Chief Minister turned it down.
