Four persons, including the driver of a privately owned ambulance, had a narrow escape in the wee hours of Sunday, when the vehicle, in which they were ferrying the body of a boy from Vizag to Ranchi, caught fire on the NH-16 near PM Palem in the city.
The occupants of the ambulance got out of the vehicle without any injuries following an alert from the driver. The body of the boy was also taken out and later sent to the destination in another vehicle.
The police said the boy had died while undergoing treatment in a private hospital in the city. The relatives of the boy were transporting the body in the ambulance o their hometown.
They had hired a private ambulance, but the vehicle caught fire midway due to electrical short circuit. The police have registered a case and investigation is on.
