Biplane cath lab machine getting ready at CMCH

A biplane catheterisation machine (equipped with two x-ray imaging generators) will soon become functional at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

The new cath lab machine which costs Rs. 6.7 crore will be inaugurated by Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar, said CMCH authorities.

The hospital’s cath lab is currently equipped with a monoplane catheterisation machine which has single X-ray generator source.

CMCH Dean B. Asokan said that installation of the biplane machine would be completed soon. The machine was procured by Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation Ltd.

“The new machine is capable of doing certain advanced procedures other than all the procedures that can be done using the single-plane machine.

“ Biplane machine will be used for procedures such as clipping of arteries, coiling for aneurysm, clipping for aneurysm and for suction of blood clot in stroke cases among others,” said Dr. Asokan.

The cath lab is currently managed by a team of three cardiothoracic surgeons, four cardiologists, four neurologists, five neuro surgeons and technicians. Dr. Asokan said that the hospital has so far performed more than 530 coronary angiograms and 153 stenting procedures.

Functioning of two catheterisation machines will benefit patients from neighbouring districts such as the Nilgiris, Tirupur, Erode and Dindigul apart from Coimbatore.
