Catholic priest Fr. Noronha dies

Rev. Fr. Denis Victor Noronha (86), well known Catholic priest of the Diocese of Mysuru, who was residing in Prashantha Nilaya at Bannimantap here, passed away on Monday.

He died at St. Joseph’s Hospital following illness. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Cathedral (St. Philomena’s Church) at 10.30 a.m., followed by the burial service at the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Gandhinagar.

The bodywill be kept at St. Mary’s Minor Seminary, opposite LIC building, New Millennium Circle, Bannimantap, for the public to pay their homage up to 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, after which it will be taken to St. Philomena’s Church for the liturgical service.


As the Secretary of Mysuru Diocesan Educational Society, Fr Noronha started schools and college in several places, especially in the rural areas for education of the poor and the needy.

He brought a revolution in the area of educational ministry by the Church in the diocese of Mysuru by his yeoman service, a press release from the Mysuru Diocese said.

Rev. Fr. Denis V. Noronha joined the diocese of Mysuru and completed his formation at St. Peter’s Seminary, Bengaluru, and was ordained a priest at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in 1957.

He served as Assistant Parish Priest at St. Philomena’s Church here for three years; and Procurator and Chancellor, Secretary of Mysore Diocesan Educational Society for several years, the release said.

He was also the Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Mysuru; St. Joseph’s Church, Mandya; O. L. of Victories Church, Somwarpet and St. Anthony’s Church, Suntikoppa.
