DMK leader and former Telecom Minister A Raja said the Central Government was shutting down the major industries operating in the Nilgiris and the State Government was watching impassively as first the Hindustan Photo Films (HPF) limited, was closed down.
Speaking to reporters in Udhagamandalam, Mr. Raja said that when he was the Lok Sabha MP representing the Nilgiris constituency, the DMK had spoken to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and had impressed upon the government the need to keep the factory running, as it was providing livelihoods to hundreds of people. “If we return to power, we will set up a multi-specialty hospital on the premises,” he said.
Mr. Raja also said that simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and State assemblies next year is not practical.
