Chandigarh: Two men arrested for attempting rape on witness in older rape case

The accused were identified residents of Jagatpura village in Mohali. Police said that the victim managed to rescue herself with the intervention of a pet dog, whose owner had taken him for a stroll.

Two men were arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a woman, at knife point in Chandigarh’s Sector 48 on Wednesday night. The woman was scheduled to depose against them in a rape case in Unnao district, UP.

The accused were identified residents of Jagatpura village in Mohali. Police said that the victim managed to rescue herself with the intervention of a pet dog, whose owner had taken him for a stroll. The dog started to bark furiously after observing the two men attacking the victim around 6.30 pm.

Later, the victim disclosed the accused’s identity to police, who arrested them from near the Sector 48 motor market.

“The accused and the victim are distant relatives. The victim works as a maid at several houses in the area. The two men were carrying a knife, attacked the woman and dragged her towards a secluded place to commit rape with her. A pet dog started barking furiously and the accused ran from the spot out of the fear. We lodged an FIR under charges of attempt to rape, assault, criminal force and common intention,” said a police officer.

The accused were produced in the district court, Sector 43 and sent to judicial custody on Thursday. A case was registered at the Sector 49 police station.
