An attempt to murder case has been booked against four persons, including a Special Sub Inspector of Police, after the car in which they were travelling and escorting a lorry smuggling sand allegedly tried to mow down a team of officials at Thathiengarpet in the district a few days ago.
The lorry, transporting sand illegally from Pudukottai, was heading towards Namakkal with the car acting as escort. The vehicle of the lorry was seized by the police and the driver, K. Saravanan (30) of Thottiyam, arrested.
The officials’ team, which included the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) of Aaraichi village, Ashok Kumar, stopped the lorry to carry out checks. The occupants of the car got out and began to argue with the VAO. Then they entered the vehicle, which allegedly tried to mow down the officials and speed away, police sources said.
During investigation, it came to light that the occupants of the car were Special Sub Inspector Krishnamurthy, his son Ajith Kumar and a close relative Nagarathinam.
On the basis of a complaint lodged by Mr. Ashok Kumar, Thathiengarpet police registered a case against the Special Sub Inspector and his son and two others under various provisions, including Section 307 (attempt to murder), of IPC read with Section 21(1) of the Tamil Nadu Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act.
The Special Sub Inspector, attached to the Social Justice and Human Rights unit at Tiruchi, was placed under suspension, the sources added.
