Crocodile fished out of reservoir

A crocodile measuring nearly 3 feet was trapped in a fishing net in Palair reservoir when a local fisherman laid the net to catch fish in the water body in Kusumanchi mandal on Monday.

The incident created a flutter among the local fishermen and reinforced widespread apprehensions among them about the possible presence of more crocodiles in the reservoir.

The Palair reservoir is the sole water source for the Palair segment of the State government’s ambitious Mission Bhagiratha mega drinking water project and the lifeline of thousands of farmers in Khammam division.

The local youth belonging to fishermen community handed over the crocodile to the Forest Department personnel late on Monday afternoon. The officials have made arrangements to release the crocodile into its natural habitat in adherence to the stipulated norms, sources said. The Forest authorities have reportedly decided to press into service a boat for patrolling the Palair reservoir to trace crocodiles.
