Duchess Club takes out car rally against plastics

The Duchess Club took out its annual All Women Car Rally on Sunday. The theme of this year’s rally was “Say No to Single Use Plastic”.

“We love to do car rallies. We started it in 2002 when there were hardly such rallies carried out by women. Since then there has been no turning back,” said Nina Reddy, joint managing director of Savera Hotel.

She along with All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi leader and actor R. Sarathkumar flagged off the rally.

100 women

Around 100 women, from all walks of life, had assembled on the Savera Hotel premises with their friends and family. They were waiting in their cars to hit the road. Each vehicle was decorated around the theme.

A few cars had posters and pictures depicting the ill effects of plastic, while others had their cars covered with plants, shrubs and steel utensils.

Basket of steel

Sudha Suresh, who had placed a basket of steel utensils in her carrier, said: “shun plastic and use steel. We all need to take a steely resolve.”

The women drove around the city covering 50 to 60 km and ended the rally at the Phoenix Market City in Velachery.

Each participant was given a different route.
