Explanation sought on grounds issue

The State Human Rights Commission has directed the authorities to submit an explanation on why the local sports talents in West Kochi were denied entry into Veli and Parade grounds.

Antony Dominic, Chairman of the Commission, has asked the Fort Kochi RDO; Secretary, Kochi Corporation; Director of Sports and Youth Welfare to submit the report within August 9.

In his complaint before the commission, Thampi Subramanian, corporation councillor, said that many sports talents had used these grounds over the past several years. These are the only two grounds available for such talents in West Kochi region.

The entry to these grounds has been restricted using iron fencing, besides keeping it locked, he said. The two grounds were modernised as training grounds in connection with the FIFA under-17 World Cup event.

The local population had expected that the grounds will be open to them after the event, but the authorities had refused entry stating that the grass would be affected, it said.
