A female panther in Nehru Zoological Park, named Deepa, aged about 22 years, breathed her last on Wednesday night after chronic ailment. She died of age-related problems, according to the information shared by zoo authorities.
Post-mortem by a team of nine experts on Thursday revealed congestion in lungs with small nodules, enlarged liver with cysts, stomach and intestine congestion, infection in kidneys, and bladder retention. Senility was concluded as the cause of death.
Samples were collected and sent to Veterinary Biological Research Institute, Shantinagar, for detailed investigation. A panther in wild generally lives up to 15 years and in captivity for around 18 years, a statement said.
This is the third animal death in zoo in less than a month’s time.
A female elephant named Jamuna died last month due to kidney ailment and hind leg paralysis. A few days ago, a lion named Crazy passed away after an abscess in the temporal region went undiagnosed.
