Foreign currency worth Rs. 36 lakh seized

Customs sleuths at the international airport here busted an attempt to smuggle foreign currency and seized $50,000 from a Dubai-bound passenger.

The Thane native, was apprehended on July 27. An examination of his baggage revealed that the currencies were concealed in specially made pouches padded with cloth in his trolley bag. The currencies were worth Rs. 36 lakh.

“While examining his passport, we found him to be a frequent flier, and on the basis of interrogation and subsequent search, the currency notes were recovered,” Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said.

Investigation revealed that he had travelled to Dubai over 30 times from various airports including Kochi. He is believed to be part of a syndicate smuggling foreign currency to West Asia for gold.
