Four held with 1 kg of meth

Recording yet another major narcotics seizure, the Thiruvananthapuram City police have arrested four persons with alleged possession of 1 kg of methamphetamine (meth), a narcotic stimulant.

Those arrested were identified as Shaji, 55, of Chirayinkeezhu; Anil Kumar alias Manas Ani or Kuzhiyan Kannan Ani, 48, of Attingal; Sasidharan, 65, of Mamom in Attingal; and Nahas, 55, of Chirayinkeezhu.

The gang landed in the police net after the parents detected certain behavioural changes in a college student, who also took to stealing money. It later emerged that the youth had fallen prey to substance abuse, following which the police nabbed the alleged peddlers through him.

Based on information obtained by District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram City) P. Prakash, the gang was apprehended by the Shadow police team at the Barton Hill Colony’s park on Tuesday. The accused have been charged under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and their arrests have been recorded by the Museum police. Two motorcycles used to smuggle the contraband were also seized.

Synthetic drug

According to Mr. Prakash, the gang is suspected to be wholesale dealers of the synthetic drug, smuggled in powdered form, which used to be peddled in quantities as small as 5 g to youngsters, college students, and tourists. Each gram of the substance used to be purportedly sold at rates ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000.

The haul is expected to fetch over Rs. 1 crore in the black market, the officer said, adding that it was for the first time that the City police had recorded the seizure of the potent drug. The police were yet to identify the source of the substance and the laboratory from which it had been produced.

Among the accused, Nahas and Anil Kumar were habitual offenders with several such cases registered against them. Nahas has even served jail term in the Middle East for a similar offence.
