Get set for vertical marathon

The second edition of vertical marathon will be held at Paithalmala here on August 18 under the aegis of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) as efforts are already under way to promote adventure sports and activities in the district.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, District Collector Mir Muhammed Ali, who is also chairman of the DTPC, said that the vertical marathon would be started from the church premises at Pottenplavu at 9 a.m. and would end at the Paithalmala Tourist Resort of the DTPC.

“It will be a near vertical climb as the route has a 500 metre elevation and it will be an extremely challenging marathon,” he said. Unlike the event last year, cash prizes would be given to winners up to tenth place and prizes would be given to winners in both men and women categories, he added.

People in the 18-50 age group can participate in the vertical marathon. Those willing to participate in the event should register their names at the DTPC here by paying Rs. 100. DTPC officials also said that they can also register and pay online through WeAreKannur App. Cash prizes for winners of first three places are Rs. 10,000, Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 6,000. The last date for registering is August 8. Last year 100 people participated in the event, they said.

The Collector said that the second edition of the Muzhappilangad Beach Run would be held in October. The first triathlon event in the district would be held before the end of the year in the Kavvayi backwaters and nearby areas near Payyannur, he announced.

Physical fitness

Mr. Ali said that efforts are also under way to encourage school students to improve their physical fitness. As many as 45 schools have been shortlisted for the initiative, he informed. The plan is to regularly check physical fitness of students in the schools.
