A 15-year-old girl was washedaway in Dodlumanehalla rivulet which was in spate owing to heavy rain near Guddekeri village in Tirthahalli taluk on Monday. At the time of going to print, her body was yet to be found.
The victim, Ashika, was a class 9 student at the government high school in Guddekeri. Because of heavy rain, a holiday was declared for schools and colleges in Tirthahalli taluk on Monday. According to sources, unaware of this, the girl headed to school.
The incident took place around 11 a.m. when she was returning to her home in Kendalabailu village with her mother. She slipped into the stream from the suspension pedestrian bridge constructed across it.
Police and Fire and Emergency Services personnel commenced the search operation soon, but to no avail. Dodlumanehalla rivulet is a tributary of the Malathi river.
Meanwhile, the district received widespread rain on Monday. The water level at Linganamakki and Bhadra reservoirs increased by two feet each in just 24 hours as their catchment areas received heavy rain.
The water level in Linganamakki,which was at 1,778 feet on Sunday, was up to 1,780 feet on Monday. The inflow was recorded at the rate of 32,763 cusecs.
The water level in Bhadra reservoir was up from 152 feet on Sunday to 154 feet on Monday. The inflow was at the rate of 17,102 cusecs.
Yadur in Hosanagar taluk has received as much as 149 mm of rain, Mani 142 mm, Mastikatte 123 mm, and Hulikal 121 mm.
