‘Guruvandanam’ kicks up a row

The General Education Department found itself at the receiving end of social media activism, after the consent it had given to a cultural organisation to conduct a programme titled Guruvandanam in a school was propagated by some as the consent given for conducting ‘Gurupada pooja’ on the occasion of Guru Pournami Mahotsavam.

With the DYFI demanding action against the department officials who had violated the secular credentials of the State’s education system, the Director of General Education has now been forced to issue a clarification.

The Director has clarified in a statement that the the department had not given permission for the ‘Gurupada pooja’, said to have been conducted at CNN School, Cherpu, as was being publicised on social media.

The statement said the department had actually given permission for a programme titled ‘Guruvandanam.’

Permission had been given to Ananthapuri Foundation and Pathanapuram Gandhi Bhavan to conduct a programme in Government schools, titled ‘Guruvandanam’, which was aimed at creating awareness amongst children on how they should love, respect and care for parents in their old age.
