Accusing Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of a pursuing a political agenda in attacking the Centre, BJP State president Kanna Lakshminarayana sought appointment of a Central technical committee to oversee the cost, quality and tendering process of the Polavaram project.
Mr. Lakshminarayana’s demand came a day after Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari, during a visit to the project site along with Mr. Naidu, asked the State government to justify the cost escalation.
“It is a national project for which funds would be provided by the Centre but it is for the State government to complete it,” he said at a press conference here.
Mr. Lakshminarayana said none of the other non-BJP governments were alleging discrimination and only Mr. Naidu was doing it with political motives.
The BJP government had fulfilled most of the promises and released funds to A.P. in true federal spirit and commitment to the all-round development of the State but not able to publicise them, he said, terming it ‘karma.’
In the housing for the poor, only Rs. 1.5 lakh per unit was promised by the State government and construction could not have been taken up but for the Centre’s contribution of Rs. 1.5 lakh per unit. With the government providing land and infrastructure, the construction cost came to Rs. 1,100-1,200 per square foot, but the poor were being made to shell out Rs. 2,400 per square foot, the BJP leader said.
