The parents of Logeswari, a student of the Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science who had a fatal fall during an unauthorised disaster preparedness drill on the campus on Thursday, have alleged that they came to know about her death only after the victim was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
Logeswari’s father A. Nalla Gounder told mediapersons at the hospital’s mortuary that the college should have informed him of her condition much earlier, but didn’t. He said he got wind of the incident only when he was informed by her friend’s father that she may have had an accident.
Logeswari’s brother N. Selvakumar said it was unfortunate that the college had allowed the drill to take place without adequate safety measures. “It did not provide any helmet, jacket or other safety gear [before the trainer pushed Logeswari from the second floor]. The Alandurai police should take action against the institution,” he said.
Students Federation of India’s district president M. Dinesh Raja said the police should probe how the college conducted the programme without permission from the authorities concerned.
Meanwhile, hospital sources said the victim’s death was likely to have been caused by chest injury and its impact on internal organs. This was a preliminary observation, and the post-mortem report is yet to be prepared.
