KRBOA threatens to boycott Nehru trophy

The Kerala Race Boat Owners Association (KRBOA) has threatened to boycott the 66th edition of the Nehru trophy boat race to be held at Punnamada on August 11, citing discrimination at the hands of the organisers of the event.

The KRBOA, which has 54 race boat owners as members, comprises the smaller category of boats. Association secretary Punnoose Joseph said here on Saturday that maintenance grant had been pending for the past three years.

“At present, government incentives are given only to chundan vallams (snakeboats). We have been denied maintenance grant for the past couple of years. Besides, our demand for proper representation in the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society (NTBRS) has not been given due consideration by authorities,” Mr. Joseph said. He said the KRBOA had expressed strong reservations over the conduct of a race of smaller boats before noon. “The race of smaller boats should be held in the afternoon prior to the race of snakeboats,” he said.

Meanwhile, officials said that a meeting of the NTBRS executive committee to be held later this month would discuss the demands of the KRBOA.
