A 35-year-old person went missing in the Periyar after a six-member group ventured into the river near the Purappillikkavu regulator-cum-overbridge near Karumalloor on Thursday evening.
The missing person has been identified as Sulaiman (35), a native of Azhikode in Thrissur. Though another person, Saji, who was in the group of six, was also washed away, he was rescued by local residents.
Fire Force officials said that the local residents had warned the members of the group, who were presumably under the influence of alcohol, not to venture into the waters but they ignored them. “They claimed that they are used to swimming in the sea and even created a ruckus in the area’’, officials said.
Fire officials said that they were searching for the missing person. “Diving has become difficult after the nightfall. There are strong undercurrents in the river due to the incessant rain’’, they said.
