In a series of incidents where women were targeted, motorcyle-borne miscreants went on a chain snatching spree at four places within 5 km radius in the city on Thursday morning.
All the incidents took place between 8 am and to 8.45 am and all the crimes were reportedly committed by two youngsters.
In one of the incidents, G Hemalatha of Marripalem VUDA Layout was robbed of her 60 gm gold chain when two persons on a motorbike followed her and snatched the ornament from her neck. The incident took place when Hemalatha was on her way to drop her children to school on her two-wheeler.
The driver of the bike was wearing a helmet and the pillion sported a cap. The incident took place when she slowed down her two-wheeler to negotiate a speed breaker.
In another incident, 25 gm of gold chain was snatched from K Nirmala Kumari reportedly by the same gang at Shanthinagar area in the city.
Nirmala Kumari is an employee with a private school and the incident took place when she was going to the school from her house. Similar incidents were reported from Susarla Colony near Butchirajupalem and Balayya Sastry Layout.
The city police said of the four chain snatching incidents, three were reported under Airport Police station limits and one under Fourth Town Police station limits. Sources said two more chain snatchings took place in the city on Thursday but the police are yet to receive any complaint.
Special team formed
DCP (Crimes) AR Damodhar said in the all cases, the bike-borne gang targeted lonely women. “We are suspecting that the gang (both youngsters) committed the crime for easy money and to meet their vices. We have formed a special team and increased the visible policing at a few places,” he added.
The police have gathered the CCTV footage in one of the cases, where the duo is seen escaping from the spot after committing the crime. The police also released the footage clips and have asked the citizens to inform the police in case they find the accused or resemblance anywhere in the city.
