DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Saturday accused the AIADMK of betraying the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu by supporting the BJP-led Central government during the no-confidence motion moved by the TDP against the Centre in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
“The AIADMK government has proved that it has no spine. Its support [for the BJP] has exposed its mysterious relationship with the BJP-led Centre,” Mr. Stalin said in a statement.
Accusing the BJP government of undermining social justice, democracy, secularism and State autonomy, Mr. Stalin said the AIADMK government, intimidated by the recent income-tax raids, had “surrendered its self-respect to the rulers in Delhi”, and had committed an “unforgivable betrayal”.
The DMK leader said the AIADMK’s stand had proved that it was functioning as a ‘benami’ of the BJP government at the Centre.
The BJP’s plan to conduct raids on the houses and offices of the relatives of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, just four days before the no-confidence motion, had served the purpose [of dissuading the AIADMK against opposing the BJP]. The raids were meant to rein in the AIADMK MPs rather than crack down on irregularities, he alleged.
