NCC cadets embark on ocean sailing expedition

A group of National Cadet Corps set sail on Tuesday from the city harbour on an adventure that will take them to Thopputhurai, a coastal hamlet in Nagapattinam, as part of an ‘Ocean sailing expedition’ organised by the NCC Group, Puducherry.

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi flagged off the expedition, code-named ‘Samudra Pheri,’ consisting of 40 NCC cadets, including 10 girls, from the Thengaithittu harbour, in the presence of Commodore Vijesh K. Garg, Deputy Director General, NCC Directorate, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The team conducting the adventure includes two NCC Naval Officers, one Associate Naval Officer and eight Permanent Instructors Staff.

In a short talk before the group set sail, the Lt. Governor hailed the young corps who were embarking on a challenging sailing expedition as the future pivot for ushering in dynamic changes in the country. The experience will add to their motivation, courage to face odds and to inculcate a “never say die” attitude, Ms. Bedi said. Besides, it would help in character building, leadership qualities and foster camaraderie.

The expedition on two fully rigged 27-ft DK Whaler boats is led by Commodore D. Dhinakaran and assisted by Lt. Cdr Shiv Shankar.

The team will halt at Cuddalore, Parangipettai, Pazhayar, Poompuhar and Nagapattinam ports and return to Puducherry on July 21.

According to a NCC press note, the expedition is a prized component of the All India NCC Competitions for the coveted ‘Most Enterprising Naval Unit’ Trophy which is awarded by the Prime Minister during the Republic Day Parade.
