Need for family planning

Collector A. Sivagnanam stressed the need for family planning since increasing population would hinder progress of any country.

Addressing a function held in connection with World Population Day here on Wednesday, he said that growing population was blocking progress of developing and underdeveloped countries.

“It is necessary to create awareness of the need for smaller families to keep the population growth under control,” he said.

Indian population is said to be making it a powerful nation soon through its manpower.

But, it could be achieved if the manpower is utilised in a constructive way for social, economic and industrial development.

It is important that every citizen is made to be aware of ill effects of population explosion.

He said that mother and child care programme has been implemented successfully for the last 50 years. It has helped in providing a space of three years between births of two children and brought down birth rate. Even wealthier families with more members would struggle for development. So, the concept of smaller families should be made a mass movement to control birth rate.

Earlier, he flagged off an awareness rally.

Joint Director (in-charge), Medical and Rural Health services, Pushpalatha, Deputy Directors (Medical Services, Leprosy), S. Ramganesh (Health Services), Medical Superintendent of Virudhunagar Headquarters Hospital, Durairaj, were present.
