The works on desilting and renovation of 31 lakes, tanks and supply channels undertaken at an outlay of Rs. 9.79 crore under the Kudimaramathu scheme – Phase II are progressing in different parts of the district.
Ashish Vachhani, secretary, Planning and Development, and monitoring officer for the kudimaramathu scheme works, inspected the ongoing desilting and renovation works in Kadaiyampatti, Omalur and Salem blocks on Monday.
Mr. Vachhani, accompanied by District Collector Rohini R. Bhajibhakare and other senior revenue and PWD officials, inspected the sluice renovation works at Nachinampatti lake in Kadaiyampatti block (Rs. 35.3 lakh); desilting works of Kolathampatti lake and the supply channels in Omalur block (Rs. 70 lakh); River Sarabanga near Omalur; Kannankurichi lake and supply channels (Rs. 48 lakh) and supply channels of Mookaneri lake (Rs. 13 lakh).
He said that the State Government had accorded priority in the implementation of desilting and renovation works under the Kudimaramathu scheme with the active participation of the local farmers’ associations.
He directed the official machinery to take effective steps along with the farmers’ bodies to desilt and deepen the water bodies, strengthen bunds and repair the sluices, so that they could hold adequate water during the monsoon period.
All the supply channels should be desilted and maintained properly to avoid water going waste during the rainy season.
Mr. Vachhani said that all the water bodies that were desilted and deepened under the scheme in the recent past were having adequate storage of water.
This has paved for the improvement of ground water level in the surrounding in a big way, he added.
