Old Guntur incident: CPI(M) seeks withdrawal of cases

Tense moments were witnessed after the Guntur urban police foiled an attempt by some organisations backed by the CPI(M) to stage a protest near the BR Stadium on Thursday. Party secretary P. Madhu and others were taken into custody following a minor altercation. The protesters were demanding that cases registered against some youth of a community should be unilaterally lifted.

Mr. Madhu said the police had acted in an arbitrary manner while dealing with the youngsters who were just bystanders when a protest in Old Guntur took a violent turn. The police had even seized several motorcycles belonging to those who work in the automobile shops in the vicinity.

The police denied the allegations and said they were merely following the legal procedure.

Ch. Vijaya Rao, SP, Guntur urban, said no arrests had been made so far.

The investigation into the incident that took place on May 15, a day before the beginning of Ramzan, was the handiwork of some anti-social elements and the police were trying to identify them based on the CCTV images and video recordings. Several police personnel were injured and the official van of an additional SP was pelted with stones.

But the issue took a political turn as several leaders of the ruling party urged the Chief Minister to withdraw the cases.

Some leaders had even charged the Opposition party with inciting the mobs but those allegations had not been proved.
