PCNTDA land in PCMC: Fake ‘go take what you want’ WhatsApp rumour has residents demarcating plots

Residents of Chikhali and nearby areas in Pimpri Chinchwad township were the latest victims of fake social media rumors.On Monday, rumours forced residents to demarcate plots in Sector no 13 of Pimpri Chinchwad new township development authority (PCNTDA), popularly known as Nigdi Pradhikaran. Officials of Pradhikaran, with the help of police, succeeded in fleeing the agitated residents away.

According to local residents,on Monday morning, a message was sent to all residents that Nigdi Pradhikaran was selling its land in Sector no 13 free of cost. The message said that residents have to just demarcate their plot as early as possible for claiming it.The message was spread across the city in a very short period of time. As a result, a large number of people marched towards Sector no 13 to demarcate their plot as early as possible.Within two to three hours, residents demarcated the entire 50 acres with cloths, stones, and whatever they had. When Pradhikar officers came to know about incident, they rushed the to spot and with the help of police, removed the residents and the items used to demarcate plots.

Ramesh Jadhav, a local resident, said,“One of my friends told me that Pradhikaran was selling their land free of cast and that we just need to select a plot and demarcate it. Hence, we rushed to demarcate a plot. We were later told that it was just a false rumour.”

Satish Khadke, chief executive officer of the Pimpri Chinchwad new township development authority, said, “Locals demarcated our plot illegally. With the help of police, we have removed now all illegal demarcations and we have also decided to fence the area. With the help of police, we will soon nab the mastermind behind it and will lodge criminal cases against those found guilty.”
