Traffic police on Wednesday cleared road space encroached upon by fruit vendors at Ukkadam to ease the vehicular flow which is currently affected by traffic diversion put in place for Ukkadam – Athupalam flyover work.
The encroachments were removed as a temporary relief and the shops will be completely removed for the flyover work later.
Officials said that encroachments by eight fruit stalls operating opposite Ukkadam police station were cleared on Wednesday evening as they were causing obstruction to traffic flow.
Apart from vendors occupying the road space, vehicles parked by buyers in front of the stalls on the road were obstructing traffic.
“Vehicular movement in and around Ukkadam was affected following traffic diversions implemented for Ukkadam – Athupalam flyover work. Free movement of buses were affected by the space occupied by the fruit stalls and vehicles parked by the buyers. We had requested the vendors in advance to clear the encroachment by themselves. The encroachments were cleared by the police on Wednesday, as the vendors did not cooperate,” said Traffic (West) Inspector K.V. Sathasivem.
He added that the police had collected written affidavits from the vendors to abide by the regulations.
The fruit stalls operating opposite Ukkadam police station will be removed by the Highways Department during the progression of the flyover works.
