In protest against the Kudumbasree Mission’s plan to expand its matrimonial service to all districts, the Kerala State Marriage Bureau and Agents Association (KSMBAA) will hold demonstrations in front of all the panchayat offices and Collectorates in the State on August 1.
Association leaders said the entry of Kudumbasree into the sector would displace hundreds of traditional matchmakers, including elderly women.
K. Chandran and K.M. Raveendran, leaders of KSMBAA, allege that Kudumbasree is trying to enter their field without complying with the Kerala Shops and Commercial Establishments Rules. The government should seriously look into the issue as it would lead to an unhealthy competition and clash in the field.
They pointed out that an official portal,www.mediatormatrimony.
com, was operational in the State with the support of all the approved members in the field. This portal was designed to help all existing service providers in Kerala as envisaged by the government and the entry of Kudumbasree with a similar venture again would make it meaningless, they claimed.
Mr. Raveendran, State general secretary of the association, said the women service providers who were not part of Kudumbasree would be the direct victims of the new move. There were several widows in the traditional matchmaking field and they would be hit hard by the Kudumbasree ventrue, he said.
However, Kudumbasree Mission coordinators said their venture was not to challenge the conventional agents in the sector but to streamline the whole service at the most affordable rate for the service seekers. Kudumbasree would offer free service to its members, which would be one of the several attractions of the new move, they said.
They also rejected the allegation that Kudumbasree was entering the field without any legal sanctity. The venture was launched in Thrissur two years ago with all the required clearances from the authorities concerned, they affirmed.
