Rain brings cheer to farmers, fills up Pullambadi tank

The water level in ponds and tanks in the district has seen considerable increase due to recent rain in the district and brought cheer to farmers and water managers.

On an average, the district receives 221 mm from the southwest monsoon between June and September. It has so far received 72 mm. While June recorded 8.64 mm, the average rainfall in July is so far 66 mm.

According to official sources, July recorded two rainy days, bringing good amount of rain in different parts of the district. Except a few rain gauge stations, most of them recorded good rainfall on July 1 and 3.

The data reveals that Samayapuram, Devimangalam, Lalgudi, Pullambadi, Musiri, Kallakudi, Vathalai and Sirukudi recorded heavy to moderate rainfall on two rainy days. The rain gauge stations in Tiruchi city too recorded between 54 mm to 74 mm. Some areas, including Pullambadi, received rain for three consecutive days.

While stating that that the progress of southwest monsoon is on a moderate level, officials say it was the rainfall received in May that increased the water level in various water bodies, particularly in village ponds and tanks, in the district.

The district received 110.8 mm rainfall in May. Similarly, it perfectly matched the normal rainfall of 125 mm during summer months from March to May. Since May, the officials say, rain continues to pour in regular intervals, thereby bringing down the temperature and recharging groundwater.

Citing a field report, S. Santhi, Personal Assistant (Agriculture) to the Collector, told
The Hindu
that more than 35% of village ponds and small tanks had water above 75% to their capacity. Village ponds in Thuraiyur and Pulivalam and Marungapuri and Manapparai too had good amount of water. It was due to continuous rainfall at regular interval. Water level in some of the system tanks too had gone up marginally.

She said the rain helped farmers to grow green fodder in different areas. There would not be much drinking problem for cattle till the onset of northeast monsoon.
