Rain lashes Kottayam after a lull

The district which continued to experience sunny weather for nearly 72 hours till Wednesday morning was again subjected to the fury of the southwest monsoon with heavy rain and gusty winds lashing many places, affecting life.

At least 75 persons from 18 families in the Kurinji area in Ramapuram village, near Pala, were moved to a relief camp established at the parish hall of St. Sebastian’s Church at Kurinji. They were under threat of landslide.

In another case, 10 persons from three families in Kidnagoor village were moved to the Government Lower Primary School at Pirayaar. These families were under threat of inundation. The district authorities have declared holiday for the school on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Kottayam-Kumarakom road experienced another cave-in at its the Arupuzha stretch resulting in a tree getting uprooted.

The Department of Mining and Geology has, meanwhile, banned all mining activities in the district from July 12 to 15 in view of the strengthening of the monsoon.
