A remand prisoner allegedly committed suicide inside the District Jail at Pudukottai on Thursday.
The prisoner, K. Senthilkumar, 48, was lodged in the Pudukottai District Jail on July 5 in connection with an attempt to murder case booked against him by the Ganesh Nagar police station in Pudukottai.
The case was booked against him after he allegedly attacked his wife over domestic problem.
Prison authorities said Senthilkumar was produced before the local court in the morning in connection with the case booked against him and brought back to the jail. He resorted to the extreme step of hanging himself in the auditorium inside the District Jail premises in the evening using a dhothi which he wore, said the authorities.
Prison officials immediately rushed him to the Pudukottai Medical College Hospital but he was declared dead. A magisterial inquiry would be conducted into the incident.
