The Kerala Women’s Commission has sought a report from the District Police Chief, Kottayam, on a complaint filed by a nun alleging that she was molested by the Bishop of Jalandhar Franco Mulackal.
Commission chairperson M.C. Josephine said on Monday that further action would be taken based on the report.
Meanwhile, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church has denied allegations of receiving any complaints to this effect.
In a communiqué on Monday, the office of the archbishop stated that it learnt from the media about a nun’s claims that Major Archbishop Alencherry did not take any action even after a complaint was filed with him.
Though it was not clear from the media about the identity of the complainant, a nun with the Jalandhar diocese had indeed met with the Cardinal and raised complaints regarding some appointments in her congregation and the inconveniences caused to her.
Since her congregation belonged to the Jalandhar diocese, which comes under the Latin hierarchy, she was advised to approach them as the Cardinal had no jurisdiction over the issue.
‘No mention of assault’
On November 23, 2017, the father of a nun working with the Jalandhar diocese gave a letter to the Cardinal about some difficulties faced by his daughter at her congregation.
However, it was not mentioned in the letter or any other documents in connection about a sexual assault allegation against the Bishop of Jalandhar.
