Reports on railway zone are an outdated update: BJP

Reacting to reports in the media that the formation of a separate zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters was a “remote possibility,” BJP Floor leader in the Assembly P. Vishnu Kumar Raju said here on Sunday that the report was baseless and an outdated update.

“The formation of the zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters will be a reality as it has been reiterated by Home Minister Rajnath Singh three days ago,” Mr. Raju said.

The Central government’s recent response to the affidavit filed in the Supreme Court was based on a technical committee report that had been submitted over one-and-a-half-years ago, he said.

Immediately after the technical committee had given an adverse report, we met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and requested him to take a political decision. He had agreed to it in principle, and only a formal declaration was awaited, Mr. Raju said, and added that people should not be misguided.

Mr. Raju further said the technical committee’s report had no relevance now in the light of the favourable political decision.

Even in the State’s core committee meeting, the issue had been discussed and party president Amit Shah had agreed to the creation of the new railway zone, he added.

After the adverse report by the technical committee, we took it up with the then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and later with his successor Piyush Goyal, who had agreed to make it a political decision, said party MLC P.V.N. Madhav.

“It has been in principle agreed to create the zone, and it is just a matter of time before it is declared,” Mr. Madhav added.
