Deputy Commissioner R. Venkatesh Kumar flagged off the ‘Sasya Santhe’, an exhibition and sale of saplings organised by the Department of Horticulture, at its nursery in Aiwan-e-Shahi guesthouse here on Thursday.
He called upon the public to make use of the occasion to buy the saplings and plant them at their neighbourhoods.
The event will be on till July 14.
Mohammad Ali, Deputy Director of Horticulture, said that as many as 2.9 lakh saplings of different species were available for exhibition and sale in the exhibition and sale organised at Malagatti, Kesaratagi, Hallisagara, Chittapur, Chandrapalli, Sedam and Kalaburagi centres for the next 10 days.
He added that the good response that gathered last year’s exhibition and sale of saplings prompted the department to organise the same on a large scale in the current year.
S.B. Diddimani, Joint Director of Horticulture, clarified that the public could contact any Raita Samparka Kendra if they wanted more information about the sapling they would buy in the exhibition.
“The Horticulture Department is planning to come up with new programmes to motivate the urban population to take up terrace gardening and finding an alternative crop to red-gram in Kalaburagi district. We will soon have a meeting with Deputy Commissioner to finalise them,” he said.
