SDPI activist held in Kozhikode

The police have arrested an activist of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on the charge of assaulting a Students Federation of India (SDPI) functionary on Monday night.

Sources in the Meppayyur police station on Tuesday identified him as Rairoth Mohammed of Ekkattur, Karayad, near Perambra.

The SFI alleged that S. Vishnu, a local committee functionary of the SFI at Karayad, was attacked by a gang of masked men on motorcycle when he was returning home after a meeting of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).

Chilli powder was reportedly sprayed on his face before Vishnu was assaulted with sharp weapons on his face, hands, and legs. Vishnu was initially admitted to the Taluk Hospital, Perambra, and then to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode.

It has been alleged that Mr. Vishnu and other SFI activists were threatened by SDPI workers after they took out a march in protest against the murder of Abhimanyu at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, recently. Mr. Mohammed was produced in the court later. The police claimed that they were on the lookout for five more people.

The district committee of the Left Democratic Front has condemned the incident, claiming that it was a handiwork of “communal forces”. The LDF will hold a dharna outside the public library on July 24.
