Shuhaib case: Cong alleges police inaction

The district Congress leadership has alleged that the police inaction in arresting even those named in the chargesheet in the murder case of Youth Congress worker S.P. Shuhaib near Mattannur here in February is part of an effort to enforce ‘jungle justice’.

District Congress Committee (DCC) president Satheesan Pacheni, in a statement here on Tuesday, said the police owed an explanation as to why the team investigating the murder of Shuhaib at Edayannur, near Mattannur, was not arresting the Communist Party of India’s (Marxist) Edayannur local secretary who was named in the chargesheet.

He said the CPI(M) local secretary was found to have given money to the assailants who had stabbed Shuhaib to death.

The CPI(M) local leader who was found to have conspired to murder Shuhaib was yet to be arrested by the police, he added.

The chargesheet names 17 CPI(M) workers as accused in the case.

Six of them including party local leader identified as K.P. Prashant were yet to be arrested.

Prashanth is charged with criminal conspiracy to target the slain Youth Congress leader and with providing financial assistance to the accused to hire a car purportedly to go for a picnic.

The District Congress Committee president said police officers should know that the system of jurisprudence would collapse when the police system degenerated into a set of minions of the ruling party.

Investigating officers would be answerable to court if they tried not to arrest the accused or save them on the basis of the colour of their flag.
