Special prayers were offered to the ‘Annai Tamirabharani’ and sage Agasthyar idols as they were brought to the town from Sringeri on Thursday.
As the ‘Tamirabharani maha pushkaram’ is to be held after 144 years along the banks of the river between October 11 and 22, nearly a crore devotees are expected to take a holy dip in the river.
Banks of the river are being cleaned in several places with technical assistance from Anna University’s regional office here.
A two-feet tall ‘Annai Tamirabharani’ and one-foot tall sage Agasthyar copper idols have been made. After performing special abhishekam and alangaaram to the idols at Sringeri Sri Saradha Mutt by Sri Bharati Vidya Theertha Swamigal, they are being taken in a procession from Sringeri to Papanasam via Hosur, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Madurai, Srivilliputhur, Rajapalayam and Tirunelveli.
As the idols were brought to the city, devotees accorded a rousing welcome to them near Nellaiyappar Temple where special prayers were offered before being taken to Papanasam, where the idols will be installed.
