Stir against move to close down engg college

A large number of parents and students came out in the open to protest against the reported move to close down the Carmel College of Engineering of the Believers Eastern Church at Perinad in Ranni taluk on Monday.

The protesters detained the Principal saying that the management decision not to conduct any admission for first-year engineering courses this year would badly affect the future of as many as 700 students at the college.

They alleged that the move was part of the decision to close down the college for ever. However, the protesters dispersed following the intervention of the District Collector P.B. Noohu in the issue late in the afternoon.

The agitation was withdrawn on the assurance that the representatives of the management would hold talks with the parents and students at the college on Tuesday itself.

Students alleged that the information denying allotment to the Carmel College of Engineering appeared on the website of the Technical University only after completing 140 admissions till Friday.

The college management said that they were unable to run the institution further due to financial crisis, making the students and their parents panic-stricken.

The BTech, MTech, and MBA students at the college and their parents had strongly protested against the management stand.

The students said it would not be that easy for them to continue their studies at a college which is about to close down. Moreover, it required assurance from the Government or the University for them to move to any other college, they said.

According to them, a good number students at the college have availed education loans and it is not sure that the students belonging to the SC/ST sections will continue to receive their benefits at the new college.

The students and parents have called for immediate intervention of the Government in the issue and ensure justice to them.
