Students hostel in Dharwad celebrates diamond jubilee

The diamond jubilee celebrations of Prahlad Nilaya students hostel will be held here on Saturday.

Nilaya president S.R. Kaulgud and alumni H.M. Kakandaki told presspersons here on Wednesday that the Nilaya is completing 60 years of fruitful service to students coming from humble background. It was established by Pejawar Mutt seer Sri Vishwesha Tirtha in 1955.

It was one of the few students hostels which was established to help poor students coming from other parts of north Karnataka to Dharwad for higher education. The 16 gunta land to construct this hostel was donated by Prahladrao Mahishi and Tulasabai Mahishi couple and hence, the hostel is named after them. In the last 60 years, over 1,500 students have shaped their career residing in this hostel, they said.

Trustee K.R. Deshpande said that from the last year, the Nilaya Foundation is giving scholarships to poor meritorious students and a sum of Rs. 12 lakh scholarship has been given. Due to the useful donations given by the alumni, a corpus fund of Rs. 20 lakh is collected and is used for student activities. To mark the 60th year of the Nilaya, the foundation plans to set up a digital library and start Akshay Patra scheme. Interested persons can donate Rs. 1,500 during anniversaries and birthdays of near and dear ones and this money would be used to serve food to students residing there. Donations to the Nilaya are exempted from tax under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.

The Pejawar Mutt seer would grace the diamond jubilee function. A shobha yatre would be taken out and a stage programme would be held at Vanavasi Ram Mandir. Educationist Gururaj Karjagi and Prabhanjacharya Vyasankere would be the other guests.
