Students urged to spread awareness of plastic ban

‘Launching a series of measures after announcing the ban on plastics from July 1, Collector S Natarajan urged students to make the district free from plastic goods.

Addressing an awareness camp at Syed Ammal Higher Secondary School here on Friday, he said Ramanathapuram district had 2.5 lakh students and they could make a difference if they carried forward the message. Pointing out that the district had 3.5 lakh family card holders and 2.5 lakh students, he said efforts made through the students to eradicate plastics would become a success.

He said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had announced in the Assembly that plastics would be banned in the State from January 1, 2019, and the district administration had announced ban on plastics from July 1, 2018, to add strength to the ban. Levy of fines against shopkeepers, vendors, hotels, eateries and traders who used plastics would begin from July 15, he said and warned cancellation of licences if shopkeepers and traders violated the ban order.

A.Chellathurai, Assistant Director of Panchayats, Narayanan, Municipal Commissioner, and Personal Assistant to Collector (Agriculture) P Raja were present.
