In a statement to the police, Mathur said he had met Vahonia in the jail where they were earlier lodged, a police official said. Both of them had decided to meet at the village when they were attacked by a mob of around 100 villagers wielding sharp weapons, the official said quoting Mathur.
Residents of the village, however, claimed that a band of about 20 persons attacked their village with the intention of robbery at midnight. When people woke up and gathered near a shop, they managed to catch hold of two of them, who were then beaten up while the others managed to escape.
The police who arrived after the attack took both the men to Dahod government hospital, where Vahonia was declared “brought dead”.
